Those who worship fashion would agree with Chanels top man Karl Lagerfeld when he declared: Fashion is the best motivation for losing weight. We all want to lose those extra pounds to fit into our dream outfit, subconsciously or not.Aside from looking good in your own clothes, the Ultimate Wardrobe, as handpicked by Manilas fashion editors and stylists, have enticed weight losers to join Nestles latest challenge.
An Hermes belt, a Chanel dress, designer goods from Rhett Eala, Michi Calica, Kate Torralba and Jun Escario are among the prizes they will get to keep if they win. Participants have to form a team of two to eight members who will follow the 14-day Nestle Fitnesse meal plan, paired with their choice of exercise routine; and post their progress online at http://www.fitnesse-14days.com. The deal? The Nestle Show Off Your Shape involves a two-week, low-fat, whole-carb regimen, and replacing breakfast and one more meal (either lunch or dinner) with Nestle Fitnesse. Sounds easy, right? Will it work? Only one way to find out. To qualify, these challengers showed up at the Greenbelt Park in Makati last Saturday and had their weight checked and recorded. Now, what happens in the next 14 days is up to them

When I travel abroad, once or twice a year, I keep my digital point-and-shoot camera in my outer coat pocket or untangled in my messenger bag, always at the ready, right there for the right shot.
I’m something of a shutterbug, a total amateur driven by the enthusiasm of a self-taught neophyte. But I learn fast, and one of the early things I learned in my journeys was how dull so many of my photos were.
They were dry, postcardy, filled with stolid if beautiful buildings and objects and places you’re supposed to photograph just because you’re there and you want indelible proof that you did indeed behold the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, Ghiberti’s bronze doors in Florence or the Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam.
What they missed were people and faces, the humanity. I almost always travel solo, and anyway, I’m not a big fan of pictures of friends and family standing robotically in front of monuments .
So I started seeking locals for my pictures. The approach not only improved my photographs but also improved my travels . Suddenly I was paying more attention to the daily activities of people, their work, play, drudgery and joys. Observing residents in action literally put a face on a place and deepened my cultural experience.
Sometimes I “sneak” photos of people engaged in everyday life – men bathing in the Ganges in Varanasi, India; a man selling prayer beads to a customer in Istanbul; a student bicycling in Beijing – yet as a rule I approach subjects who have a striking face or are wearing an arresting outfit or are doing something vaguely exotic and ask permission to take their picture. This requires a spot of nerve . But I’ve found that in many places, if you are courteous, low-key and smiling, people are receptive, even eager.
This hasn’t been the case in most Western countries I’ve traveled, because a different sense of privacy reigns. I rarely try to take pictures of people in large European cities, for example.
Yet I’ve had great success in Asian nations, where residents display a friendly excitement and curiosity toward the dopey American who wants their photo. Children in developing countries are especially agreeable to having their picture taken, mugging, posing, snatching at the camera to see their image

SAN FRANCISCO — Fitch Ratings has affirmed the ‘BBB-’ rating on approximately $2,410,000
outstanding certificates of participation (COPs) evidencing
proportionate Interests of the Holders Thereof in Installment Payments
to be paid by the Palomar Pomerado Health System (a California Local
Health Care District) from Purchase Payments to be received from Indian
Health Council, Inc. (IHC). The Rating Outlook is Stable.
The ‘BBB-’ rating affirmation and Stable Outlook are primarily supported
by the lock-box mechanism that ensures federal appropriations flow
directly from the federal government to the trustee to be held for debt
service before IHC receives the remainder, effectively ensuring that the
certificate holders are paid before any other debt obligation. Also
supporting the rating and Stable Outlook is IHC’s essentiality of
services and adequate liquidity. IHC is the only provider of healthcare
services in a vast geographic region in San Diego County, California
servicing roughly 15,000 clients.
IHC’s fiscal 2008 days cash on hand and cash-to-debt metrics of 106.5
days and 90.3% compare well to Fitch’s ‘BBB’ ratios of 114 days and
62.6%, respectively. Through the nine-month interim period, ending Sept.
30, 2009, IHC reported a loss of $176,000, and had $4 million in
unrestricted cash and investments, equating to 93.4 days-cash-on-hand.
Concerns include IHC’s small revenue base ($14.3 million in fiscal
2008), historic losses from operations, and reliance on a single source
of funding. IHC relies heavily on annual Indian Health Services (IHS)
payments which are based partly on the total population served, the
scope of services provided, and the previous year’s allocated dollar
amount. Fitch believes that the possibility of a cut in the IHS payments
is very remote given the program’s history plus the stable trends in
IHC’s patient volume and the service area population trends.
IHC owns and operates community clinics that provide primary health care
services, dentistry, and behavioral health to Native American
reservations in San Diego County, CA.

A BRITISH man yesterday denied disrupting a transatlantic flight after he was hauled off a plane for refusing to move his injured arm.
John Alexander Murray, 50, of Lochalsh Crescent, Milton of Campsie, Glasgow, was arrested by police at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts, shortly after 11pm yesterday (4am GMT).
Prosecutors claim he blocked the plane’s aisle with his arm, which is in a splint following a motorcycle accident. He then argued with an air steward and became belligerent and disruptive before being removed, it is alleged.
Murray At East Boston District Court yesterday, Mr Murray was charged with interfering with a flight crew. He pleaded not guilty and was bailed on a 300 dollar (pounds 178.60) bond, according to a police official in court. The US Airways flight from Philadelphia was due to fly non-stop to London, but it was diverted to Boston after crew became concerned over the behaviour of Murray

ADAPTING a beloved children’s book for the screen is a difficult task. Adapting a beloved picture book, famous as much for its vivid illustrations as for its spartan plot, is considerably more challenging. Doing it while answering to an increasingly skeptical studio, whose moneymen are convinced that you’re squandering their investment on an expensive art film that’s too childish for adults and too bizarre for children–well, that’s a real test of a director’s mettle.
It’s a test that Spike Jonze has passed. His version of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, five difficult years in the making, is gorgeous, haunting, and completely unlike any children’s story you’ve ever seen committed to the screen. Yes, it’s also messy, weird, and occasionally tedious. But considering what it could have been–either an overindulged auteur’s spectacular misfire, or a panicked studio’s compromised botch–it’s a miracle that the finished product is this good.
In Sendak’s slender story, a rambunctious boy named Max is sent to bed without his supper, dreams his way into a world of gallumphing monsters who acclaim him as their king–and then, homesick, dreams his way back out again.
In Jonze’s thicker, darker film, Max is a child of divorce, and his rampages are at once a cry for attention–from his older sister and her crowd of friends, and from his weary mother–and an inchoate protest against a home life that’s gone badly out of joint.
One of these protests ends with him racing out of the house into the night, where a suburban subdivision abruptly gives way to a dark wood and a ragged coastline. There, a small sailboat stands ready for his journey across a storm-tossed ocean to the forested, flame-lit island of the Wild Things, where Max finds a society of monsters that’s as disrupted and unhappy as the one he’s fled.
Most of the initial disruption comes from Carol (the rumbling voice of James Gandolfini), who’s tearing down the Wild Things’ strange houses–they’re like enclosed bird’s nests, or hollow balls of yarn–in a fury over the apparent defection of his red-haired crush, KW (Lauren Ambrose), to a different gang of friends
