Trainer spotlight: Peter Lavelle: fitness advice from the contributors who give our stories their brawn

Men’s Fitness, Feb, 2008 by Sean Hyson

CREDENTIALS: Peter Lavelle, who works out of Boston, is a personal trainer and cardio kickboxing instructor certified through the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and a sports nutritionist certified through the International Fitness Association (IFA). He’s also the co-founder of Ultimate Bootcamp, an outdoor workout program for people of all fitness levels, now in its fourth year.

PHILOSOPHY: Lavelle mixes cardiovascular training with muscle-building resistance work and does the majority of his group training outdoors. “We use park benches for triceps dips and grass instead of floor mats for pushups,” says Lavelle. “Fitness shouldn’t be a chore; it should be something you’re always looking forward to.”

TOP THREE TIPS: 1) Get your butt outta bed. “To burn fat, do an a.m. workout as opposed to a p.m

Royal blush

Royal blush

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), June 17, 2009

THE Royal Family seem to keep out of the limelight these days, but they’ve got the Examiner forum grumbling (does it do anything else?) Otis bemoaned: “While the D Day services were ongoing what were the royals doing? The Queen went racing, the two warrior princes went playing polo. Prince Charles at least managed to attend and, yes, the late invitation from France was an afterthought and a disgrace.

“Considering the rumpus and the badges worn in protest by some veterans, a very feeble response by the royals. Especially when, as the veterans pointed out, the armed forces of the UK fight for Queen and country.” AndyA was fine with the involvement (or lack of): “It seems perfectly appropriate to me that they weren’t involved. They weren’t exactly in the trenches during the war so why should they be involved now?” StephB took exception to this: “Well, thas nooan so sure abairt me eh? Well, I have an army pension, and really object to this sort of republican idiocy!! Her Majesty had to await an invitation which our illustrious idiotic Government failed to arrange for

Diabetes: no patients left behind: with diabetes being most prevalent among black and minority ethnic communities, practitioners across the UK are developing culturally specific services to target them

Community Practitioner, Feb, 2009 by Kim Ly

According to the charity Diabetes UK, treating diabetes cost the NHS 1 million [pounds sterling] an hour last year–10% of NHS spending. In 2008, there were 2.3 million people in the UK diagnosed with the condition, but it is especially prevalent in people of black or South Asian origin. Last year, more than 300 000 people from these communities were diagnosed, and Diabetes UK estimates that a further 70 000 were unaware that they had diabetes.

Culturally appropriate services

Unite/CPHVA lead professional officer Cheryll Adams states: ‘The best way of reaching any population is often through members of that particular community. It may be that district nurses can recruit “champions” from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities who have diabetes and are willing to provide peer support and education to other community members. With such high levels of diabetes in these communities, it is essential that interventions are targeted and relevant.’

Diabetes UK diverse communities officer Juliet Enever comments: ‘It is unknown why diabetes is more prevalent in BME people. What is clear is that it is vital to provide culturally specific information for BME communities. We have found from a number of Diabetes UK roadshows that BME people were more likely to use information that is culturally appropriate and in a language that they understand.’

She adds: ‘Tailored and structured diabetes education is the way forward, particularly as 20% of the South Asian community and 17% of the black African and Caribbean community in the UK have type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, we receive a number of phone calls from healthcare professionals seeking advice on how best to tailor educational groups to meet the needs of BME people, because there are not enough staff trained in providing this type of information.’

Happy hearts

In Gloucester, the role of community diabetes specialist nurse (CDSN) was established in 2005. In addition to making home visits and providing diabetes education for healthcare professionals–including district and practice nurses–the role has since expanded to include projects aiming to improve access to diabetes services for the ethnically diverse population living in this area.

The Khush Dil (’happy heart’) project is run by a number of CDSNs with the aim of targeting BME people at risk of developing diabetes.

Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust (PCT) diabetes specialist nurse Gail Pasquall believes that Khush Dil has been a success: ‘We have had some great results. Glycaemic control has improved for some patients, and GPs report that the health of patients has improved.’

Despite its success, it has been difficult to get some messages across

Olive oil: pain-reliever

Olive oil: pain-reliever

Muscle & Fitness/Hers, Sept-Oct, 2009

Many experts recommend cooking with olive oil for its health benefits, but a new study suggests that it may also be an effective pain-reliever. For decades, scientists have known that bitter medicine is the best medicine. Now a study from the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) finds that newly pressed extra-virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal, a chemical compound that induces a strong stinging sensation in the throat, just like the popular painkiller ibuprofen.

Based on these two products’ similarly irritating tastes, researchers tested whether oleocanthal mimics the pain-fighting properties of ibuprofen. The compound was found to indeed act as a natural anti-inflammatory in a way that’s “strikingly similar” to a dose of Advil

Buns warm inside, but cold on outside

Topeka Capital-Journal, The, Oct 22, 2008 by Phil Anderson

By Phil Anderson

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

Neither the brisk winds of October nor the threat of hail and rain could keep about 20 die-hard hamburger lovers from camping out Tuesday in the parking lot of the new Spangles restaurant at 440 S.W. 29th.

About a dozen dome-shaped tents and portable canopies had popped up by Tuesday morning outside the east entrance to the restaurant, which will have its grand opening at 6:30 a.m. today.

Amid 50-degree temperatures, the campers are taking part in a promotion in which the first 100 customers receive a coupon book that gives them a free Value Pak meal once a week for a year.

By Tuesday morning, some campers had come and gone.

“People have given up and left already,” said Steven Herrold, 53, of Topeka, who was among the first to get in line early Monday. “It’s just too cold.”

Herrold said he was one of about 15 people who camped out overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning. He said he planned to stick it out until the restaurant opens early this morning.

“I’ve been here since 5 or 6 o’clock Monday morning, and I haven’t left,” he said. “I don’t have a tent. I slept out in the open, under the stars.

“It was kind of cool, but I just hunkered down under the covers. I was glad it didn’t start raining.”

Others brought tents of various sizes to help keep them shielded from a cool breeze and rain that fell later Tuesday.

Larry Kenneth Applebee, 20, of Topeka, said he arrived Sunday night and was prepared to camp out when a police officer informed him he would be ticketed for loitering.

Applebee said he went to the Dillons parking lot just east of Spangles, where he fell asleep in his car

Motorcycles and goats

Motorcycles and goats

Canadian Medical Association. Journal; CMAJ, May 26, 2009 by Ueffing, Erin

DISPATCH FROM THE MEDICAL FRONT

The first thing I noticed was the smell in the air. It was a dusty, dry smell of fires, animals, and people; an old smell, foul yet faintly comforting.

Bamako, Mali’s capital, is a city of contrasts.

The sensory overload was swift and striking.

The reek of diesel fumes mingled with the sour odours of sweat and garbage.

A riot of sound hit me: honking, whistling, laughing, arguing.

Ascending a filthy staircase, I found a hallway lined with children hunched over primitive sewing machines.

A jarring juxtaposition of objects formed a row outside: motorcycle, motorcycle, motorcycle, goat, motorcycle.

By day, children with sores on their faces giggled at the sunburn marring my pale skin, women smiled openly at me as they balanced bananas on their heads and men grinned fiercely at each other as they bartered.

The Malians I encountered seemed happy

Baby items had been seized from man’s car

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Jul 27, 2006

Various items of clothing, baby supplies and other things were seized from the vehicle of a former person of interest in the case of missing Destiny Norton.

Fingerprints, strands of hair and fibers in the car were also among items removed from the blue passenger car belonging to Sevkija Ferhatovic, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in 3rd District Court Wednesday.

Ferhatovic was believed to be involved in the 5-year-old’s disappearance until he was cleared July 17 after nearly two days of questioning.

Destiny’s father, Ricky Norton, told police he had seen the vehicle parked down the road from his residence and thought it was strange, after talking to Ferhatovic, that the vehicle had children’s toys and blankets inside, as stated in court documents.

The affidavit states police impounded the vehicle for a registration violation and later seized most of its contents as potential evidence in the then-missing-child case.
